Selene

The Fertility Awareness iPhone app for serious women

Frequently Asked Questions

General

Will Selene teach me how to measure my signs?

Selene is intended as a simple, powerful, and beautiful tool for women who already understand how to chart their own fertility. If you want to learn, we highly recommend the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.

What else do I need?

You'll need a basal body thermometer, that reads to at least two decimal places (Celsius), or one decimal place (Fahrenheit). Normal fever thermometers are probably not accurate enough, and are optimized for the wrong range of temperatures.

Recording data

Can I record temperatures in Celsius or Fahrenheit?

Yes. This option is found in the the iPhone Settings app. Open Settings from the iPhone Home screen and scroll down the main list until you find Selene. Tap on Selene to find the options to change the temperature units (ºC or ºF) and precision (1 or 2 decimal places).

Can I record temperatures with one or two decimal places?

Yes. This option is found in the the iPhone Settings app. Open Settings from the iPhone Home screen and scroll down the main list until you find Selene. Tap on Selene to find the options to change the temperature units (ºC or ºF) and precision (1 or 2 decimal places).

How do I enter a temperature?

On the Day tab, tap on the dashes where it says "--.- F" or "--.-- C". A sliding temperature gauge will open; drag it left or right until the temperature you want is under the indicator in the middle.

How do I delete a temperature entered by mistake?

Tap on the unwanted temperature on the Day tab to edit it. Spin the temperature scale all the way to the right (down to the lowest temperatures). Just past the last number value is a tick for you to set the temperature back to "--".

Can I record the actual time I took my temperature?

There is not an option to set the time explicitly, but in the standard note options for each day there's an item for Late Measurement. When you mark an interference like Late Measurement (or Sickness or Alcohol), Selene asks if you want to "exclude" the temperature, marking it as untrustworthy. If you do, it draws the temperature on the chart in grey instead of blue, and skips that point when drawing the temperature line. You also can always note the actual time in the freeform comment field, if you want.

How do I enter a cervical fluid, position, or menstrual flow?

On the Day tab, tap on the dashes ("--") under the value you want to change. A list will pop up with possible values – tap on the one you want.

Can I track who my partner was when I mark intercourse? Can I track more than on partner?

Yes!

  1. Under the More... tab, choose the Note Settings screen.
  2. Scroll down to the Intercourse section.
  3. Choose "Add new note..."
  4. Enter your new partner's name and pick an icon for him.
  5. Tap Done.
Your new partner will now appear as an option in the Intercourse section of the Note Picker each day.

Can I track specific ovulation tests, such as Clearblue Monitor vs OV watch results?

Certainly, via the custom notes feature.

  1. Under the More... tab, choose the Note Settings screen.
  2. Scroll down to the Tests section.
  3. Choose "Add new note..."
  4. Enter something like "Clearblue monitor positive" as a note name, and pick an icon.
  5. Tap Done.
Repeat steps 3-5 for "Clearblue monitor negative" and whatever else you want to track. Now when you add a note from the Day tab, you'll have new more specific options to pick.

Charting data

Why is day 1 of my cycle is counted as the last day of the prior cycle and the first day of the new cycle?

It's not really; it's just drawn on the chart for context so you can see the next cycle beginning. The History tab shows the dates and lengths for your cycles without any overlap.

Cycle and Ovulation Detection

Additional discussion

Does Selene automatically detect menstrual cycles?

Yes! Selene begins a new menstrual cycle on the first day with flow of "light" or greater. The History tab will show you a list of your cycles, with their start and end dates and their duration in days.

Selene marked a new cycle on a day I didn't expect. What happened?

Selene starts a cycle in two circumstances: on the first day of new menstrual flow (light or greater) after days without; or if you enter anything after a long enough gap (29+ days) with no data recorded. In the latter case, Selene is assuming your period happened while you were away from the app and you just didn't record it. If this is incorrect, you can "stitch together" the cycle by entering a note or some data of any kind every few weeks.

Can mark a "cycle" as a pregnancy so Selene treats it appropriately?

Unfortunately, not yet. This improvement is very much on our to-do list.

Will Selene automatically identify my ovulation date?

Yes! Open Settings from the iPhone Home screen and scroll down the main list until you find Selene. Tap on Selene to find the option to "Try automatic detection", and switch the slider to on.

Will Selene draw my cover line for me?

Yes! Open Settings from the iPhone Home screen and scroll down the main list until you find Selene. Tap on Selene to find the option to "Try automatic detection", and switch the slider to on. Selene will then calculate your cover line according to the rules of Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler.

Will Selene tell me when I'm fertile?

Yes, it can provide a prediction according to the rules of Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. Open Settings from the iPhone Home screen and scroll down the main list until you find Selene. Tap on Selene to find the option to "Try automatic detection", and switch the slider to on. Selene will then draw shading on your chart to indicate each day how likely you are to be fertile.

Can I mark my own ovulation date?

Yes, you can manually mark the date when you believe your ovulation occurred. (This will override any automatically identified day, if you have automatic detection turned on.)

  1. On the Chart tab, touch the chart to select the day you want to mark.
  2. Tap the circled blue arrow button in the callout box to go to the Day tab.
  3. Tap "--" under "Days Past Ovulation" to open the "Set Ovulation Day" screen.
  4. Tap "Occurred this day".
Selene will now count your luteal days in this cycle for you, and highlight the ovulation day on the chart.

Can I enter my peak day and mark my cover line?

You cannot specifically enter your peak day or cover line. However, if you have turned on automatic detection, Selene will calculate them for you according to the rules of FAM. If found, they will be drawn on the chart, and used in identifying your most probable ovulation day.

Selene has calculated my ovulation day incorrectly, or failed to calculate it. What's wrong?

Please see Help: Fertility Detection for discussion and possibilities.

I just got the app, and I skipped the question about setting the beginning of my cycle. How can I fix the cycle day numbering?

Just go back and make an entry for day 1 of your cycle:

  1. On the Day tab, tap the date at the top of the screen.
  2. A date picker will open. Spin the wheels to set the day your cycle started, then tap "Done".
  3. Tap "Menstrual flow" and choose "Light" or heavier flow.
Selene will recalculate your cycle, and your days will then be numbered correctly.

Import, Export, and Back-up

Without the ability to create an account how is my information stored? What happens if my phone crashes or is lost – is there a back up and restore option?

It's a very good idea to back up data as important and personal as your cycle history. Your data is stored on your phone, and in the phone backups you make with iTunes. You can also at any time email yourself a spreadsheet file containing all your data if you wish to set a safe copy away for yourself.

How can I send the actual chart, for instance to my doctor?

The Data Sharing function currently sends only your raw data as a spreadsheet file, but you can get an image of your chart by taking a screenshot.

  1. With the chart on your screen, hold down the Power and Home buttons together for a couple seconds and the screen will flash.
  2. Open the Photos app that came with your device.
  3. Open the Camera Roll album.
  4. Tap on the screenshot image to open it full screen.
  5. Tap on the Action icon (rectangle with outward arrow) in the lower left and choose Mail to send the image.
Better sharing and printing for chart images is a popular wishlisted feature. If it would help you, please add your vote to support@daringplan.com.
